"It's Probably Just Stress." But What If It Isn't?
We've all heard stories of women being told, "You're just overthinking it," or "It's probably stress." And I'm pretty sure at one point you might've experienced this yourself.
Sometimes it is stress. But sometimes, it isn't.
For years, medical research mainly studied male bodies, which meant that men's symptoms often became the "standard". As a result, women with the same condition but experience different symptoms are easily dismissed.
A heart attack is a good example. Most of us picture someone clutching their chest.
But many women experience symptoms like extreme fatigue, nausea, jaw pain, dizziness or shortness of breath instead. Because these signs aren't talked about enough, they can be mistaken for something less serious.
It's not just heart disease either. Conditions like endometriosis, ADHD, and autoimmune disorders often take YEARS to diagnose in women. Many spend that time being told they're "fine" when they clearly know something feels off.
It doesn't stop there.
Iron and vitamin D deficiency affects nearly 1 in 2 Indian women, leading to a constant feeling of tiredness, dizziness or struggling to focus.
And this is almost always brushed off by people as "just stress."
My point is obviously not to make you distrust doctors. Most healthcare professionals genuinely want to help. But this is just a reminder that medicine isn't "one-size-fits-all" and you know your body better than anyone else.
If something doesn't feel right, don't be afraid to ask more questions, get a second or even third opinion and keep pushing for answers. Advocating for yourself isn't being "dramatic" or "overcautious". It's being informed.
