💬 Casual Conversations💡 advice

Everyone's Looking at You. Or Are They?

Ever walked away from a conversation and replayed every single thing you said?
"Why did I say that?"
"Did I sound weird?"
"They're definitely thinking about it."
Here's the funny thing: they're probably doing the exact same thing about themselves.

This is a psychological phenomenon called the spotlight effect.
It's our tendency to believe that people notice us far more than they actually do.

You think everyone noticed the stain on your shirt.
The awkward laugh.
Your one eye looking smaller in that Instagram story.
Or those two times you stumbled over your words during a presentation.
But the case is most people are too busy worrying about their own stain, their own awkward laugh, their own posts and their own presentation.

We're all walking around thinking there's a spotlight on us when in reality, everyone is standing under their own.
That's not to say people never notice things. They do. But rarely for as long or as deeply as we imagine.
And realizing that can take a huge weight off your shoulders.

Maybe that embarrassing moment wasn't the lasting memory you thought it was.
Maybe posting that photo isn't as big a deal as it feels.
Maybe speaking up in that group discussion won't have everyone analyzing your every word.
Sometimes, the biggest thing stopping us from doing what we want isn't other people's judgment.

It's the version of their judgment we've created in our own heads.

This is your sign to go do that thing you've been talking yourself out of. ✨
