The Pink Tax: Why Being a Woman Can Cost More

Most of us don't compare the men's and women's aisles while shopping.
We pick up the product that's "meant for us" and move on.
But if you did stop and compare them, you might be surprised to find that the "women's version" often costs more, even when the only difference is its scent or colour of the packaging.

Turns out, there's a name for this. It's called the pink tax.
It's not an actual government tax. It's the extra amount women often end up paying for products and services that are marketed specifically to them.

Take razors, for example. Studies have found that women's razors are frequently priced higher than men's, even when the only noticeable difference is it's colour or packaging. The same has been seen with deodorants, shampoos, body washes, clothes and even toys!

It doesn't stop at products. Services like haircuts, dry cleaning and several personal care treatments can also cost women more than it does for men.

When you're paying more for daily essentials, the extra cost doesn't stay small for long.

That doesn't mean every product aimed at women is unfairly priced. Sometimes ingredients, materials or manufacturing costs do differ. But this is rarely the case.
When two products are almost identical and one costs more simply because it's marketed to women, it's worth asking why.

As consumers, the best thing we can do is look beyond the packaging. Compare ingredients, sizes and prices instead of assuming the "women's version" is just the better option.

Remember, the best purchase you can make is an informed one.

What's one product you've noticed costs more just because it's marketed to women?

Thank you for sharing this. And it's not just one product or service that's marketed to women and ends up costing more. There are so many examples.

It's also not just about the pink tax. There are hidden costs that come with simply living as a woman.

For example, many women choose to pay more to live in a gated society because safety is a major consideration, whereas many men would simply pick the cheaper option regardless of whether it has security.

The same goes for transportation. For shorter distances, men often book Rapido or Uber bikes, while many women end up choosing the more expensive cab because it feels safer.

So it's not only that products and services aimed at women tend to cost more. Women are also compelled to spend more out of pocket because staying safe often comes with an added price tag.
